In 1934 Ernst Röhm instituted a honor dagger for members serving prior to December 1931. The dagger was identical in every respect to the standard SA dagger with the exception that it had the inscription “In Herzlicher Freundschaft Ernst Röhm” to the reverse of the blade. After Röhm’s fall from power during the “The night of the long knives” in 1934, all SA personal where ordered to remove the inscription. Surviving examples can sometimes be found with partial inscriptions remaining while the majority of the daggers had it completely ground off.
